MicroURANUS: Developing Safe and Clean Nuclear Power for Carbon Neutrality

Frequent refueling of small modular reactors (SMRs) may undermine safety, environment, economy, security as well as public acceptance. MicroURANUS is the world’s first civilian nuclear reactor that can run for the entire life of 40~60 year only with initial LEU (12.5% enrichment) fuel. In addition, MicroURANUS is the first SMR to eliminate the risk of core melt-down, hydrogen explosion and excessive radioactivity release by using liquid lead-bismuth as coolant with its boiling point as high as 1,670 °C at one atmosphere.

This technological breakthrough has been materialized by indigenous corrosion- and radiation- resistant steel, named AFATi. The low-pressure coolant helped slim-down MicroURANUS to the bodylines of airport limousine bus and automate its mass production lines. The elimination of refueling will pave the road for the world free of nuclear-weapon.

SMRs are like parallel computers with each chip module downsized to avoiding overheating while uprating collective power. This micro reactor (MR) is to change the energy game fundamentally. Unlike water-cooled and/or gas-cooled SMRs, MicroURANUS is agile to efficiently resonate with variable renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power.

Finally, we are pround to assure you that all spent nuclear fuels are to be recycled, to extract some 100 times more energy from uranium than do water- or gas-cooled SMRs. The final radioactive waste from the recycling process will be safely buried underground as the intermediate-level wastes that requires only 300 years of institutional control, leaving behind no high-level wastes.

In early 2030s, MicroURANUS will play a key role in clearing roads to the net-zero goal by massive deployment of safe, clean and affordable energy. MicroURANUS Corporation started up on the UNIST campus to present the sustainable and peaceful world for future generations.
